Óbein ræða

 

 

Þegar við breytum beinni ræðu í óbeina þarf að breyta ýmsu.

Skoðum dæmi:

„My name is Stan,“ said the plumber. (bein ræða)

 

The plumber said that his name was Stan. (óbein ræða)

 

Ef það sem sagt er í beinni ræðu er í fyrstu persónu breytist það í þriðju persónu í óbeinni ræðu. Tíð sagnorðsins breytist líka eftir ákveðnum reglum sem hér segir:

 

Ef bein ræða er í einfaldri nútíð verður óbein ræða í einfaldri þátíð:

„I love chocolate,“ said Stan the plumber.

Stan the plumber said that he loved chocolate.

 

Ef bein ræða er í samsettri nútíð verður óbein ræða í samsettri þátíð:

„I‘m having a cup of tea,“ said Stan the plumber.

Stan the plumber said that he was having a cup of tea.

 

Ef bein ræða er í framtíð verður óbein ræða í skildagatíð:

„I‘ll call you tomorrow,“ said Stan the plumber.

Stan the plumber said that he would call me tomorrow.

 

Ef bein ræða er í núliðinni tíð verður óbein ræða í þáliðinni tíð:

„I‘ve been here before,“ said Stan the plumber.

Stan the plumber said that he had been here before.

 

Ef bein ræða er í einfaldri þátíð verður óbein ræða líka í þáliðinni tíð:

„I went to Greece last year,“ said Stan the plumber.

Stan the plumber said that he had been to Greece last year. 

(Manstu af hverju went breytist í been?)

 

Þegar spurningum er breytt í óbeina ræðu þarf líka að huga að ýmsu. Tíðin breytist á sama hátt og ef um fullyrðingu væri að ræða, en orðaröðin breytist líka:

 

„How are you today?“ Stan the plumber asked his mother.

Stan the plumber asked his mother how she was.

 

Ef ekkert spurnarorð (how, where, who, what, why) er í spurningunni þarf að nota annað hvort if eða whether eins og í þessu dæmi:

 

„Are you trying to be funny?“ Stan the plumber asked his father.

Stan the plumber asked his father if he was trying to be funny.

„Is that my cup of tea?“ asked Stan the plumber.

Stan the plumber asked whether that was his cup of tea
